DEPARTMENT NO. III • INGREDIENTS, LABELS & ROUTINE

Beauty & Skincare Buying Guides

Plain-language guides to skincare ingredients, from peptides and retinoids to vitamin C, cleansers, and sunscreen. Learn what an ingredient list can and cannot tell you.

WHAT TO CHECK

What to Check First

Three things worth checking on any listing in this category before you compare prices.

CHECK I

Read the Full Ingredient List

Ingredients are listed roughly by concentration. An active that appears near the end of a long list is usually present in a small amount.

CHECK II

Fragrance and Common Irritants

If your skin reacts easily, look for fragrance-free products and patch test anything new before using it on your face.

CHECK III

Packaging and Storage

Some actives, such as vitamin C and retinoids, break down with light and air. Opaque or airless packaging helps them last.

HOW WE WORK

How We Write Our Skincare Guides

Skincare marketing often promises more than an ingredient list can support.

Our beauty guides explain common ingredients in plain language: what they are, how they are generally used, and what to watch for. We draw on published research summaries, regulatory guidance, and manufacturer information.

We do not run clinical or laboratory tests, and our guides are not medical advice. Skin varies widely. If you have a skin condition, are pregnant, or use prescription treatments, talk to a dermatologist or pharmacist before adding new actives.

Each guide includes practical steps: how to patch test, how to introduce one product at a time, and how to read packaging and expiry dates.

Affiliate links, where present, are disclosed and do not change what we recommend.

AVOID THESE MISTAKES

Common Mistakes When Buying Skincare

MISTAKE NO. 01

Storing Vitamin C in Light and Heat

L-ascorbic acid serums can darken and lose strength over time. Keep them closed, cool, and away from light, and replace a serum that has turned dark orange or brown.

MISTAKE NO. 02

Treating "Natural" as "Gentle"

Essential oils and plant extracts can irritate sensitive skin. Fragrance-free does not always mean irritant-free, so patch test new products.

MISTAKE NO. 03

Layering Too Many Actives at Once

Using a retinoid, an exfoliating acid, and vitamin C in one routine raises the chance of irritation. Introduce one active at a time.

MISTAKE NO. 04

Skipping Sunscreen With Actives

Retinoids and exfoliating acids can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen matters even more when you use them.
